- Sensitivity
- Begin at the mode default. Lower it one step at a time until the detector becomes stable.
- Ground balance
- Follow the exact manual. Rebalance after a clear move between dry and wet sand.
- Discrimination
- Keep it moderate while learning. Heavy rejection can hide small or mixed signals.
- Sweep
- Slow, level, and overlapping. Keep the coil in one moisture band during each test.
- Test target
- Use one known coin or ring-sized target to confirm that every quieter setting still hears it.

Confirm the ground first
Know the manager, legal sand band, recovery rule, tide, and wildlife closures before changing a detector setting.

Choose Beach or multi-frequency
Use the detector’s Beach program when it has one. A simultaneous multi-frequency detector is often calmer in conductive wet salt sand than a basic single-frequency setup.

Ground balance where the manual says
If your detector offers ground balance in Beach mode, do it over clean sand. Repeat when you move from dry sand to wet sand.

Lower sensitivity until it becomes quiet
Maximum sensitivity is not the goal. Reduce it one step at a time until random chirps mostly stop while a test target still sounds clear.

Keep the coil in one zone
Salt changes quickly at the dry-wet edge. Keep the coil low and level, but do not scrape it. Avoid dipping it in and out of the wash on every swing.

Cross-check every possible target
Turn 90 degrees, shorten the sweep, and listen for a repeatable center. A signal that follows every coil bump or vanishes away from the waterline is probably ground noise.

What is the best sensitivity for wet beach sand?
There is no universal number. Start with the Beach-mode default, then lower sensitivity until the detector runs quietly enough to hear a repeatable test target.
Why does my detector beep when the coil touches wet sand?
Salt is conductive, and a coil bump changes what the detector sees very quickly. Keep the coil level just above the sand and reduce sensitivity if bump signals continue.
Should I ground balance on a salt beach?
Follow the manual for your exact detector. Some Beach modes use a special balance range or fixed behavior; others let you balance over clean wet sand.
Can a waterproof coil go into the surf?
Only the coil may be waterproof. Keep the control box and connectors dry unless the manufacturer says the complete detector is submersible.
