The coastal exception is narrow. It does not turn every state-park beach, inland beach, or underwater area into open detecting ground.
What is clear
Three rules to carry into the field.
- The park manager sets the open coastal segment between the dune edge and the water or high-water line.
- Submerged detecting is prohibited in Florida state parks.
- Historic objects more than 50 years old may not be kept. A search for one known lost item must be arranged with park staff.

Call the exact park before your trip. Ask which beach segment is open, which recovery tools are allowed, and whether closures or wildlife protections affect that day.
Federal ground
State rules do not answer federal land.
Federal regulation generally prohibits possessing or using a metal detector in National Park System areas. Narrow stored-device, navigation, scientific, mining, and administrative exceptions do not create a recreational exception.
