Technique
Let the water slow you down.
Low, level, and overlapping.
Move the coil in a short, smooth arc. Do not lift it at the ends. Moving water pushes the coil, so shorten the sweep before adding speed.
One small scoop at a time.
Cross-check from another direction. Mark the center, scoop once, then scan both the hole and scoop before digging again.
Fresh or salt
The water changes the setup.
- Fresh water: often quieter for the detector, but mud, weeds, rocks, poor visibility, and sudden drop-offs still matter.
- Salt water: conductive salt can create false signals. Use Beach mode or the manual’s salt setup and lower sensitivity until stable.
- Moving water: a bumped or flexing coil can sound like a target. Keep the cable secure and the sweep controlled.
- Audio: normal wireless headphones do not work usefully through water. Use compatible wired waterproof audio or vibration.
After the hunt
Rinse before salt and sand settle.

Do not open charging caps or connectors while the detector is wet or sandy.

Is underwater metal detecting legal?
It can be, but water access does not automatically allow detector use or target recovery. Ask the exact manager about the water, bottom ownership, tools, protected objects, and reporting rules.
Is it safe to metal detect underwater alone?
Do not make a first underwater hunt a solo hunt. Use a buddy, calm shallow water, a clear exit, and safety gear that fits the conditions and local rules.
Should a beginner start in fresh water or salt water?
Calm shallow fresh water is often easier because it usually causes less salt interference. Waves and currents can still be dangerous, so firm footing, clear visibility, legal access, and a simple exit matter more than the water type.
How do I keep a target from disappearing in the sand?
Shorten the sweep, mark the center with your foot or scoop, take one small scoop, then scan both the hole and the removed material again.
Why does my detector make false signals in salt water?
Salt is conductive, moving water can flex or bump the coil, and a high sensitivity setting can make both effects louder. Use Beach mode and lower sensitivity until the machine becomes stable.
How should I clean a detector after a water hunt?
