What this means
The plain-English answer
Statewide rules protect earth, sand, minerals, and historic or archaeological objects. A unit can add an order that bans detector possession or use.
What is clear
3 rules to carry into the field.
- Do not treat silence on a park webpage as permission.
- Statewide provisions restrict disturbing or removing natural and cultural material.
- Some park units publish stricter metal-detector orders, with any exception requiring written approval.
Final local check
Before you leave home
Identify the exact park unit, read its posted orders, and ask the district or park office whether detector possession, use, and recovery are allowed in the area you plan to visit.
Federal ground
State rules do not answer federal land.
Federal regulation generally prohibits possessing or using a metal detector in National Park System areas. Narrow stored-device, navigation, scientific, mining, and administrative exceptions do not create a recreational exception.
Read the official sourceBLM may allow low-impact prospecting on suitable land, but closures, developed sites, protected areas, cultural-resource law, and active mining claims can change the answer. Ask the local field office first.
